Frequently Asked Questions

What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are tags added to a URL that allow analytics tools like Google Analytics to track where traffic comes from. The five standard parameters are source, medium, campaign, term, and content.
Which UTM parameters are required?
At minimum, you should use utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign. These three parameters give you enough data to identify the traffic source, marketing channel, and campaign name in your analytics.
Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?
Yes. Google Analytics treats "Facebook" and "facebook" as different sources. Use consistent lowercase naming conventions across all your campaigns to keep your analytics data clean.
What is the difference between utm_term and utm_content?
utm_term identifies paid search keywords, while utm_content differentiates between multiple links or ads pointing to the same URL, such as a text link vs. a banner ad in the same email.
